N900 1.2009.44.1The Nokia N900 has been finally updated to 1.2009.44.1v44.1 is just a minor update and I haven’t noticed any big changes by now. It contains mostly small adjustments invisible to user preparing for next update. The update can be downloaded either via the Nokia Software Updater or straight from the application manager. Unfortunately, the N900 doesn’t support UDP (User Data Preservation) so that all your applications, e-mail accounts, custom background and your homescreen will be wiped out when you update it with the NSU. However, if you update it using the application manager none of your data will be deleted.

Changes from 1.2009.42.11 to 1.2009.44.1:

  • The application manager has been redesigned and looks more appealing.
  • Red Pill mode is gone
  • Ovi catalogue has been added
  • After an application is installed the application manager will not jump at the top

Firefox for Mobile RC2

Mozilla has released the Firefox for Maemo 1.0 second release candidate (RC2), after ten days of the RC1 release. My favourite aspect of this release is the spell checker, which highlights typos and misspelt words in the form field. If you currently have the beta 5 installed, you should automatically receive a software update. Alternatively you can download it at Firefox.com/m. Check out what new in the RC2 after the break. N900 MMS

In terms of connectivity and messaging the Nokia N900 offers pretty much everything – everything besides MMS comparability. Some critics have put the N900 on the same level as the Apple iPhone, which also cannot sent and receive MMS. However,  thanks to fMMS, N900 users can sent and receive MMS finally. Apparently it depends on your provider whether it works or not. Nonetheless, this app is fixing another flaw of the N900. At the moment fMMS is available in the ‘Extras Devel‘ catalogue.

Screenshot-20091229-151617.pngDuke Nukem 3D, a first-person shooter computer game, is available for the Nokia N900. The game was originally developed by 3D Realms and was published by Apogee Software.

You control the game with the keys, the accelerometer as well as with the touch-screen. Well, the goal in the game is to go through a city and to kill the zombies. Apparently this game works not 100% on the N900 and it takes a while to get used to the gameplay but nonetheless it’s fun. Go to the application manager and download ‘Duke Nukem 3D Shareware‘.

DSCF3220Still there’s no new firmware update for the Nokia N900 available. However, a few selected contributors got the chance to test the upcoming firmware in advance. Unfortunately, this isn’t the big update all N900 user have been waited for. Portrait mode hasn’t been added in neither the internet browser nor in the entire menu. Anyway, PR1.1 should be faster and snappier and fix a bunch of bugs. As soon as the firmware goes public we’ll let you know.

The Twitter plugin tightly integrates Twitter to the contacts and the conversations. It imports your Twitter friends and saved search queries to contacts, and receives mentions/replies, DMs and Twitter search results as conversation threads. In addition, you can sent replies or DMs to any Twitter friend straight from contacts, simply by tapping on their Twitter IDs. In my opinion this isn’t the best twitter application currently available. Although it’s tightly integrated some necessary functions are missing. However, it’s still in the Extra-Devel repository and some functions might be added in due course. Tell us your thoughts about this plugin.
