Finally Nokia have announced that the shipments of the Nokia N900 have now started. The Nokia N900 will be available in retail stores shortly November with an estimated retail price of EUR 500, excluding sales taxes and subsidies. It’s equipped with Maemo 5, a 5 megapixel camera, 1GB application memory and much more.
The Nokia N900 has generated a lot of interest since its public launch in August, which has been reflected in the device preorders,” says José-Luis Martinez, Vice President, Nseries, Nokia. “What’s exciting is the Maemo software, which takes its cues from the desktop computer and offers a full browsing experience like no other handset. Here’s a quick demo of the video playback on the Nokia N900 courtesy of UberGizmo. Although the video is overstretched, you can still see how crisp the video is actually displayed, very nice indeed.
The Mozilla based Maemo 5 browser is the only mobile browser to handle flash in a desktop fashion. And the recently announced Google Wave is probably the complete neo-communication platform. Combine the two together and you have just entered a tech geeks wet dream, the convergence will allow great things in terms of productivity and social networking, and will enable the world to connect in a way never before thought possible. The release of a standalone application by Google would not even be necessary. Certain aspects of the software can be optimized in order to make this work seamlessly. Matthew Miller of Nokia Experts has put together a great little article highlighting some of the “cool” features the Nokia N900 comes with. He managed to get his hands on the N900 User Guide and has been busy scouring through to see what he could find. The tips include keyboard shortcuts in different aspects of the OS and how you can open new windows in the browser, and also the different coloured notification lights that resemble the battery life remaining on the device.
Nokia’s Ovi Store isn’t available for Maemo5 yet. However, you can expect the Ovi Store to come soon. Thus, it will be ready when the first Nokia N900 will attack the first retailers and customers. In the Ovi Store you can buy and download applications, games, themes, ringtones and more.
