Today, MeeGo 1.1 has been released for handsets.

We are pleased to present this Day 1 release of MeeGo Handset.

As part of this release, we are excited to present you with a fresh look and feel of our handset user experience. In doing so, we have included icons and visual assets on the toolbar and home scree,n as place holders for future development to make sure you have the full look and feel of MeeGo Handset. Besides look and feel assets, we are also excited to provide you with our current applications focuses. We have included a dialer, sms, photo viewer, browser, and personal connection management applications.

These are our current works in progress, and we wanted to share them with you, as we continue to work on them. This will allow you to see how all the applications will start to come together for our upcoming MeeGo 1.1 release of MeeGo Handset. We have also included several settings options like working wifi and a phone simulator, so you may use the majority of the currently working applications. Additionally, at the end of this page are some of the known issues you may encounter and workarounds to help you.

The available MeeGo repositories now include the operating system base from the Linux kernel to the OS infrastructure, up to the middleware layer for the following platforms.

• Intel Atom-based netbooks
• ARM-based Nokia N900
• Intel Atom-based handset (Moorestown)
• Intel Atom-based in-vehicle

Finally a beta version of JoikuSpot has been made available for the Nokia N900.  JoikuSpot is an application turn your phone into a mobile W-Lan HotSpot. So you can connect your laptop to internet by discovering your N900 phone via WiFi. Jump over to download it.

The current release is still in BETA as some compatibility issues related to WiFi stability against some laptop models equipped WiFi chipsets still apply. My buddy Chris has put together a great review of PrBoom on the Nokia N900. He set up the N900 using the TV-out port and walks you through all the menu options and gameplay features of this first person shooter. Of course, this review was done before the game was available to download so to get this on your device now you don’t need to go through the process he has mentioned, you can simply click on the download link on the right. The status menu allows you fast access from almost everywhere. There come some applets right out of the box but there are a few 3rd party applets which are useful indeed. One of which is 3G/2G Mode Selection Applet that allows you to switch the three network modes (3G, 2G and Dual) from the status menu. Using this applet you can easily save the precious baterylife of the N900. 3G/2G Mode Selection Applet is available in the application manager.

The Nokia N900 has today received a major firmware update 2.2009.51-1 (PR1.1) fixing many issues and bringing new features to the device. The firmware released earlier this week was PR1.0.1 and was intended not only to allow access to the Ovi Store, but also prepare the Application Manager for FOTA (Firmware-Over-The-Air). You can also download the update using NSU (Nokia Software Updater) but make sure you back up your content before updating. Read the full changelog after the break.

After the recent update, it is now officially possible to access the mobile version of the Ovi Store using your Nokia N900 web browser. Visit store.ovi.mobi and you will be given access to a new apps, games, themes, wallpapers, ringtones and more, that was not previously available via the Application Manager. So head over and load up your hadsets, and let us know if you find any gems.

Mozilla has released the Firefox for Maemo 1.0 second release candidate (RC2), after ten days of the RC1 release. My favourite aspect of this release is the spell checker, which highlights typos and misspelt words in the form field. In terms of connectivity and messaging the Nokia N900 offers pretty much everything – everything besides MMS comparability. Some critics have put the N900 on the same level as the Apple iPhone, which also cannot sent and receive MMS. However,  thanks to fMMS, N900 users can sent and receive MMS finally. Apparently it depends on your provider whether it works or not. Nonetheless, this app is fixing another flaw of the N900. At the moment fMMS is available in the ‘Extras Devel‘ catalogue.
