Finally a beta version of JoikuSpot has been made available for the Nokia N900.  JoikuSpot is an application turn your phone into a mobile W-Lan HotSpot. So you can connect your laptop to internet by discovering your N900 phone via WiFi. Jump over to download it.

The current release is still in BETA as some compatibility issues related to WiFi stability against some laptop models equipped WiFi chipsets still apply. Production release will ship shortly as the compatibility issues are resolved. Please subscribe for Joiku updates to be informed when the production release is available.

The status menu allows you fast access from almost everywhere. There come some applets right out of the box but there are a few 3rd party applets which are useful indeed. One of which is 3G/2G Mode Selection Applet that allows you to switch the three network modes (3G, 2G and Dual) from the status menu. Using this applet you can easily save the precious baterylife of the N900. 3G/2G Mode Selection Applet is available in the application manager.

In terms of connectivity and messaging the Nokia N900 offers pretty much everything – everything besides MMS comparability. Some critics have put the N900 on the same level as the Apple iPhone, which also cannot sent and receive MMS. However,  thanks to fMMS, N900 users can sent and receive MMS finally. Apparently it depends on your provider whether it works or not. Nonetheless, this app is fixing another flaw of the N900. At the moment fMMS is available in the ‘Extras Devel‘ catalogue.

The game was originally developed by 3D Realms and was published by Apogee Software.

You control the game with the keys, the accelerometer as well as with the touch-screen. Well, the goal in the game is to go through a city and to kill the zombies. Apparently this game works not 100% on the N900 and it takes a while to get used to the gameplay but nonetheless it’s fun. Go to the application manager and download ‘Duke Nukem 3D Shareware‘.

The back story involves Duke traveling back from his mission in Duke Nukem II only to have his shuttle shot down by aliens. Finding Los Angeles overrun, he sets out to once again defeat any alien menace.
There is little story in the game except for few cutscenes after the completion of an episode. During the game, Duke discovers that the aliens are capturing women. After he kills the first boss, Alien Battle Lord, he journeys to space, where he reaches the alien mothership and kills an Alien Overlord. He finally saves the day after he goes back to Earth and kills the leader of alien menace: Cycloid Emperor. The story continues in the Atomic Edition, in the fourth episode, The Birth. It is revealed that the aliens were capturing women to produce them a Queen, which could quickly give birth to alien drones. Duke is set out to find her lair and kill the Queen, thus thwarting the alien plot.

More over you can search for videos or just view the ‘most viewed’, ‘most disczssed’, ‘top rated’ or ‘most recent’ videos. Currently it’s in the extras-devel repository and not final. Compared to ZouTube, another YouTube client we already induced, it’s not as stable and fast. Nonetheless Digia@Scene has its advantages.

Maemo is a really special operation system and in many  ways different than Symbian. One difference is the application manager which is based on catalogues. By default only the Nokia Application catalogue is activated. Maemo Extras, a catalogue featuring a bunch of apps, is deactivated by default but can be activated easily.

However, there are also two other big catalogue – Extras-devel and Extra-testing. Developers upload the newest version of their software to Extras-devel. From there the packages go Extras-testing and finally Extras through an automatic and human Quality Assurance process. This is a repository for developers and regular contributors of specific software projects. The applications in Extras-devel and extra-testing are waiting to be tested and aren’t final. There might occur some error so install apps on your own risk.

In order to add Extras-testing and Extras-devel go to the Application manager, select Application catalogs and then new. Than just fill out the detail:
