Yet we haven’t seen the official UI for the first Meego device. However, the closer the first Meego device comes the more conecept UI we get to see. This time its a 3D User Interface executed on MeeGo. iXonos has developed an application based on Sony Crackle’s video streaming service. They wanted a flashy UI that would leverage all levels of graphic performance. Ixonos has built the platform from the interaction and information architecture up towards the user interface layer ensuring top-form functionality and stunning graphics.
What is interesting about this demo is that the application is being shown off on two different system being build using two different programs. On the Nokia N900 we see the UI being created by Rightware’s Kanzi solution which has stereoscopic 3D capabilities. On the Lenovo S10-3t we see the exact same UI being built using Qt.
Two different methods for building a 3D UI on MeeGo with identical results!
If you’re wondering when this app is going to be available well, Sony merely gave Ixonos permission to use Crackle to for use in this demonstration. So there is no word on whether or not Crackle and its growing collection of Sony’s library of TV shows and movies will be making it to a MeeGo device near you!

In a significant development in the convergence of communications and computing, Intel Corporation and Nokia are merging their popular Moblin and Maemo software platforms. This will create a unified Linux-based platform that will run on multiple hardware platforms across a wide range of computing devices, including pocketable mobile computers, netbooks, tablets, media phones, connected TVs and in-vehicle infotainment systems. Called MeeGo, the open software platform will accelerate industry innovation and time-to-market for a wealth of new Internet-based applications and services and exciting user experiences. The status menu allows you fast access from almost everywhere. There come some applets right out of the box but there are a few 3rd party applets which are useful indeed. One of which is 3G/2G Mode Selection Applet that allows you to switch the three network modes (3G, 2G and Dual) from the status menu. Using this applet you can easily save the precious baterylife of the N900. 3G/2G Mode Selection Applet is available in the application manager.
The Nokia N900 has been finally updated to 1.2009.44.1. v44.1 is just a minor update and I haven’t noticed any big changes by now. It contains mostly small adjustments invisible to user preparing for next update. The update can be downloaded either via the Nokia Software Updater or straight from the application manager. Unfortunately, the N900 doesn’t support UDP (User Data Preservation) so that all your applications, e-mail accounts, custom background and your homescreen will be wiped out when you update it with the NSU. However, if you update it using the application manager none of your data will be deleted.
Changes from 1.2009.42.11 to 1.2009.44.1:
The application manager has been redesigned and looks more appealing.
Red Pill mode is gone
Ovi catalogue has been added
After an application is installed the application manager will not jump at the top
In terms of connectivity and messaging the Nokia N900 offers pretty much everything – everything besides MMS comparability. Some critics have put the N900 on the same level as the Apple iPhone, which also cannot sent and receive MMS. However, thanks to fMMS, N900 users can sent and receive MMS finally. Apparently it depends on your provider whether it works or not. Nonetheless, this app is fixing another flaw of the N900. At the moment fMMS is available in the ‘Extras Devel‘ catalogue.
